The Organization of Independent Artists, Inc., is a non-profit group founded by Warren Tanner in 1976 as a grassroots artists’ movement to expand and enrich the exhibition of art in public and alternative spaces in the New York Metropolitan area. As an artist-run organization, OIA is dedicated to expanding the arena for the presentation of art, thereby increasing public awareness and involvement in the arts. During its 30 year history, OIA has provided exhibition opportunities to over 8,000 artists at pivotal points of their careers. Mission: OIA provides regular public exposure for artists through open and juried exhibitions, and artist-curated exhibitions in public and alternative spaces throughout New York City. Free from commercial gallery pressure the artists determine the type of work and the way it is shown. With these exhibition programs, OIA makes quality art accessible to new audiences. OIA is guided by the principle that artistic expression is a vehicle that transcends economic, political, and cultural boundaries.
